Lula Wins a Historic Fourth Term in Brazil
Follow spoken words in real time.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, often called Lula, has won a historic fourth term as the president of Brazil. The official election results showed Lula received about 51.8% of the votes, beating right-wing senator Flávio Bolsonaro by almost 4.4 million votes. This election was very close, and it is the first time since 1985 that a candidate lost the first round but still won the final round to become president.
Lula’s victory is important because he made a political comeback after years away from office. He led Brazil before, from 2003 to 2010, and started his career as a trade-union leader. The extra time for voting was needed after many people faced bad weather and transport problems, which delayed their chance to vote.
After the result, Lula returned to lead Brazil, starting his new term in 2023. The country remains divided, and Lula will need to work with a conservative Congress. Many Brazilians have concerns about high prices, crime, and debt. Lula’s new term will begin in January 2027, and he faces big challenges ahead.
