The late Paul Reubens, famously known as Pee-wee Herman, has opened up about his sexuality after years of speculation surrounding the beloved star. In the newly released two-part docuseries “Pee-wee as Himself,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Salt Lake City, Reubens reveals that he identified as gay. This poignant series is set to air on HBO and Max later this year.

Reflecting on his life, Reubens states, “I was as out as you could be, and then I went back in the closet.” He explains that being openly gay would have had detrimental consequences for his career, prompting him to conceal his true identity for many years.

In the documentary, he shares intimate insights into his past, including a relationship with a painter named Guy during the 1970s in Los Angeles. Despite their breakup, Reubens visited Guy before he succumbed to AIDS, remarking, “To talk about seeing someone at death’s door, that’s what that was.” He candidly admits that AIDS “scared the heck out of me” during that era.

Reubens also recounts the heartfelt letter from his father after coming out, expressing support by saying, “Son, if you’re homosexual, I hope you can be the greatest homosexual you can be.”

Wolf, the documentary’s director, noted the sensitivity of discussing Reubens’ sexuality, acknowledging his lifelong private nature. Reflecting on the impact of being publicly labeled a pedophile, Reubens stated that it altered “everything moving forward and backwards.”

Reubens, who passed away in 2023 after a private six-year battle with cancer, left behind a legacy of laughter and joy, touching the hearts of millions.
