Google to Shut Down One VPN Service

In a surprising announcement, Google has stated it will be discontinally the virtual private network (VPN) services offered under Google One later this year. This decision follows Google’s realization that the VPN function was remarkably underused.

Back in 2020, Google One launched its VPN service, providing enhanced security to users’ Android phones. An elaborate white paper encapsulating the functioning of the VPN was published, showcasing the impeccable security enhanced by Google’s newly introduced service. An independent audit of the scheme by a third party further endorsed Google one VPN’s credibility, encouraging potential users to leverage its benefits.

Originally, only the premium subscribers of Google One could avail the services of Google One VPN for $9.99 per month. However, in a beneficial move in 2023, the service was made available to users on the $1.99/mo plan, expanding its user base.

The VPN system, which is available in Google One apps across platforms, will however be discontinued as Google found people were scarcely using the feature. The shuttering of the VPN allows the tech giant to redirect resources to support other features with high-demand within Google One.

With the changing dynamics, the Google One VPN users will be guided towards alternate third-party VPN services. It is important to note that this does not affect the complimentary Pixel VPN introduced with the Pixel 7 series in 2022, which will remain operational as previously planned. Existing Pixel owners, especially those who own Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, and Fold, will experience an upgrade in June, transferring from using the One app to an in-built service. Meanwhile, the VPN offered with Google Fi also remains untouched.

Google’s move to axe the VPN service follows other changes, such as making AI editing tools in Google Photos free and spinning off the unlimited Magic Editor feature as a separate subscription service. As technology evolves and user needs change, companies must adapt to keep up, and Google’s move seems to reflect this philosophy.
