Sony Removes 8K Tag from PlayStation 5 Boxes

Share

Sony has decided to remove the 8K tag from PlayStation 5 boxes, a feature that was prominently displayed since the console’s launch. The new boxes now only mention the capabilities of 4K/120 fps and HDR, omitting any reference to 8K output. This change was noticed by Digital Foundry’s John Linneman, who pointed out the absence of the 8K tag on recent PS5 boxes.

While Sony had initially marketed the PS5 as compatible with 8K displays, the reality is that very few games actually support this resolution. The adoption of 8K TVs is also limited, making it a less relevant feature for console gamers. Microsoft had also highlighted 8K support for the Xbox Series X, but Xbox head Phil Spencer acknowledged that 8K is still considered “aspirational technology” and may not become standard in video games for years to come.

For more insights on the PS5’s potential for 8K output, readers can explore IGN’s analysis of what would be required for games to transition to this higher resolution.
