Perplexity announced on Thursday the rollout of its new agentic AI for Android—dubbed the Perplexity Assistant—which is designed to perform multi-step actions autonomously for its users.
“We are thrilled to introduce Perplexity Assistant to all Android users,” said Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas in a post on X. “This signifies a significant transformation for Perplexity, evolving from a mere answer engine to a fully integrated assistant capable of interacting with other applications and executing essential tasks.”
Accessible via the Perplexity mobile app, the Assistant leverages the company’s existing “answer engine” framework, providing users with the ability to set reminders and plan future actions, similar to the new Tasks feature of ChatGPT. For instance, it can automatically add a calendar event for an upcoming function.
Moreover, users can initiate immediate actions, such as requesting a rideshare or searching for music. The Assistant can even utilize the user’s camera; hypothetically, you could command it to find nearby restaurants and make reservations on your behalf.
Perplexity Assistant will be available for free in 15 languages, including English, Spanish, and French. However, its compatibility with other agentic AIs on the device remains uncertain. As generative AI continues to evolve, Perplexity is joining a crowded field, with various companies racing to innovate similar functionalities.
