Writers Guild Celebrates 77th Annual Awards Ceremony

Share

The 77th annual Writers Guild Awards are being presented this evening through simultaneous ceremonies held in Los Angeles and New York City, with Deadline providing live updates as the winners are announced. A comprehensive winners list can be found below.

The nominations, which recognize the finest achievements in film, television, new media, news, radio, and promotional writing, were disclosed on January 15, following two postponements attributed to the wildfires in Los Angeles.

Last year’s strike-affected WGA Awards saw top honors in filmmaking awarded to The Holdovers and American Fiction for Original and Adapted Screenplay, respectively. While American Fiction had previously claimed the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, Justine Triet and Arthur Harari’s Anatomy of a Fall triumphed over Alexander Payne’s Holdovers for the Original Screenplay Oscar. The leading winners in the television categories for 2024 included Succession, The Bear, and The Last of Us.

Vince Gilligan, creator of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, has been awarded the WGAW’s Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Excellence, while raMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes, screenwriters of Nickel Boys, will receive the 2025 Paul Selvin Award.

The WGA East will celebrate Scott Frank with the Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement, Bill Lawrence with the Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence, and Kathy McGee with the Richard B. Jablow Award.

The Writers Guild Awards frequently exclude notable films due to specific eligibility criteria; productions not adhering to the WGA collective bargaining agreement or works crafted by non-union members are ineligible for these esteemed awards.

Consequently, prestigious awards-season contenders including the Golden Globe-winning Conclave, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Inside Out 2, The Room Next Door, Sing Sing, and The Wild Robot are disqualified from the Adapted category. In the Original Screenplay realm, All We Imagine as Light, The Brutalist, Hard Truths, the Gotham Awards winner His Three Daughters, I Saw the TV Glow, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, September 5, and The Substance are also ineligible.

Joel Kim Booster is hosting the Los Angeles ceremony at the Beverly Hilton, while Roy Wood Jr. is emceeing the New York event at the Edison Ballroom in Manhattan.
