Comedian Tim Dillon, who has a fleeting role as a security guard in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” recently discussed his thoughts on the film during an appearance on “The Joe Rogan Experience.” He labeled Todd Phillips’ much-debated sequel as “the worst film that has ever been made.” The sequel has garnered predominantly negative reviews and struggled at the box office, raking in just $58 million domestically and $204 million globally—significantly lower than the original 2019 film, which grossed over $1 billion.
“It’s the worst film ever made,” Dillon asserted. “After the success of the first ‘Joker,’ there was extensive speculation about its appeal to certain audiences, including incels and those resonating with themes of male rage and nihilism. In response, the creators seemed to think, ‘What if we went in the opposite direction?’ Now we have Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga performing dance numbers to the point of absurdity.”
“The movie lacks any coherent plot,” he added. “While we were on set in our security uniforms at Arkham Asylum, my colleagues and I would often hear parts of the film and express our disbelief. It was as if we were left wondering, ‘What exactly is happening here?’ It’s so poorly constructed that it doesn’t even qualify as ‘hate-watchable.’”
Dillon speculated that perhaps the sequel was a $200 million “practical joke,” deliberately subverting audience expectations. Interestingly, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino recently praised the sequel on “The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast,” commending Phoenix’s performance as one of the best he has ever witnessed.
In Tarantino’s view, “The Joker directed the movie,” suggesting that Phillips embodies the very essence of the Joker character, challenging conventions and defying expectations in a playful yet provocative manner.
