Sir Elton John has expressed strong concerns about the UK government’s plans regarding artificial intelligence (AI) and copyright laws. He called the government “absolute losers” and said he feels “incredibly betrayed” because these plans could let tech companies use artists’ work without paying for it.
In an interview on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Sir Elton said that if the government proceeds with these plans, they would be “committing theft.” Recently, the government rejected suggestions that would require AI companies to reveal what content they are using to build their programs.
Sir Elton highlighted that young artists struggle to protect their work against large tech companies. He believes they lack the resources to fight back. He mentioned that the House of Lords had voted to change the law to protect artists, but MPs in the House of Commons disagreed, which means the law is still under discussion.
He warned that the government risks taking away young artists’ opportunities and income. Sir Elton also criticized Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, saying he must “wise up” to the situation.
Playwright James Graham, who spoke alongside Sir Elton, shared similar frustrations. He said the government seems willing to let tech companies benefit at the expense of creative individuals.
Many artists, including Sir Paul McCartney, have joined a letter urging the Prime Minister to update copyright laws to protect them from AI’s influence. A government spokesperson stated that they want both the creative industries and AI companies to thrive but will first assess the feedback from consultations on these proposals.
