Shia LaBeouf Documentary Explores Abuse at Cannes

Share

Leo Lewis O’Neil’s documentary “Slauson Rec” was a late addition to the Cannes Film Festival lineup, yet it quickly emerged as one of the festival’s most talked-about films after its premiere in the Cannes Classics section.

The film, which garnered a two-minute ovation on Sunday, was marketed as an exhilarating journey into an experimental theater company led by a famous, or some might say infamous, actor. However, in the more intimate Grand Palais theater, the two-hour-and-25-minute documentary unfolded not as a whimsical adventure, but as a harrowing exploration of ego-driven turmoil, complete with instances of physical confrontation and intense heated exchanges.

Initially aimed at creating a supportive “family” of artists in South Central Los Angeles, the narrative devolved into chaos marked by emotional upheaval and disturbing behavior. During the screening, LaBeouf attended for the first time and expressed gratitude to O’Neil, saying, “I’m so grateful [O’Neil] still lets me around him.”

In a present-day interview, LaBeouf reflected, “I’ve done a lot of coming to terms with the failure that was my life.” The premiere’s atmosphere mirrored the trials faced by the theater group: a mix of hopeful creativity overshadowed by moments of explosive anger and self-justifications. This emotional turmoil prompted nearly 30 audience members to leave during the showing.

The film features emotionally charged incidents, including a young actress, Sarah, who, despite her mother’s illness, chooses to rehearse for a play only to be fired by LaBeouf days before opening night. Another performer, Zeke, faces criticism and physical aggression from LaBeouf, leading to his eventual exit from the project.

Before Cannes, O’Neil revealed to Vanity Fair that he began the documentary when LaBeouf invited him to film his acting class. Despite facing legal challenges later, LaBeouf supported the project, allowing O’Neil to depict their experiences candidly—unvarnished and raw.
