Amtrak train service between Boston and New York was back up and running late Saturday night following a power outage that had caused cancellations along the busy northeast corridor for most of the day.
According to Amtrak, the power outage was attributed to a lightning strike, although the exact location of the strike was not disclosed. Initially, the disruption was reported as a result of a malfunctioning breaker causing a power outage on all tracks between New York’s Penn Station and New Haven Union Station in Connecticut.
The rail service issued an update at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, informing customers that they were working to rebook travel plans for those impacted by the adjustments. Amtrak expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the disruption.
Social media posts by Amtrak revealed that power issues had been ongoing since Friday morning, causing numerous delays and cancellations. However, by Saturday night, two trains were operating on schedule: the 65 train from Boston to Newport News, Va., and train 66 from Roanoke, Va., to Boston.
Most trains are expected to resume their normal schedule on Sunday, with some exceptions. Amtrak announced the cancellation of trains 143, 162, and 150, citing equipment locations during the service disruption. Additionally, trains 54 and 157 will operate on a modified schedule.
Travelers who wish to change their reservations will not incur additional charges, and Amtrak assured that affected passengers will be accommodated on similar departure times or offered alternative travel dates.
For further information, messages were directed to Amtrak. The rail service also mentioned that about 4.6 million people were projected to travel by bus, train, or cruise ships during the Fourth of July holiday, indicating a 9 percent increase from the previous year and nearing pre-pandemic levels.
