Apple is facing a lawsuit over the prices of its iCloud storage service. The lawsuit claims that Apple has made its iCloud prices very high. This makes a lot of money for Apple. The people who are suing Apple also say that Apple users can only use iCloud for backing up their devices and storing their data.
Users of Apple devices get 5GB of free iCloud storage. But, a lot of users think this is not enough. So, they buy more iCloud storage. This has been the case since 2011 when Steve Jobs first introduced the free 5GB storage.
The lawsuit focus is on iPhone users who can only use iCloud for full device backups. iCloud only allows 5GB of storage for free.
Apple does ask its users to use iCloud for backing up certain file types. But for other files like photos and videos, users can choose other storage services like Google Drive. Because of this, people say that Apple is stopping other storage services from competing fairly with iCloud. So, Apple can keep the free storage at 5GB but most people will need to pay for more storage to back up their devices.
The lawsuit also says there is no good reason for Apple to ask users to use iCloud for some files. They believe this is only to stop competition and promote its own iCloud service.
The lawsuit is being led by Hagens Berman law firm. They have also led other lawsuits against Apple. People who have bought iCloud storage and want to be part of the lawsuit can sign up on the Hagens Berman website.
