Hilaria Baldwin is reflecting upon her engagement to Alec Baldwin in their forthcoming TLC series.
Entitled “The Baldwins,” which is set to premiere on Sunday, February 23, at 10 p.m., the show promises to provide viewers with intimate insights into the couple’s domestic life within their expansive five-bedroom Manhattan apartment, shared with their seven children.
In the inaugural episode, the former yoga instructor, aged 41, opens up about her union with the esteemed Hollywood figure, who is now 66.
Alec, who was previously wed to Kim Basinger from 1993 to 2002, candidly shares in his confessional, “Following my initial marriage, I declared, ‘Let’s secure a prenup.’ It’s an undeniably uncomfortable conversation,” to which Hilaria responded, “Indeed, it is awkward.”
She added, “However, I do not entirely comprehend the intricacies of a prenup, as it stipulates conditions such as, ‘after a specific number of children, it becomes this.’ My inclination at the time was to simply sign it. In retrospect, that may have been unwise; I would now thoroughly review it.”
Hilaria elaborated, “I expressed my willingness to sign, and subsequently, it was implied, ‘Well, we need not proceed.’”
The couple’s cherished seven children comprise Carmen, 11, Rafael, 9, Leonardo, 8, Romeo, 6, twins Eduardo and Marilu, 4, and Ilaria, 2. Additionally, Alec shares a daughter, Ireland, aged 29, with Basinger.
In this introductory episode, Hilaria also addresses the ongoing scrutiny over her accent, which has been the subject of critique for years.
“I hold a deep affection for both English and Spanish,” she articulately explained to the cameras. “The amalgamation of the two does not render me inauthentic; rather, it exemplifies normalcy.”
“It would be disingenuous to claim that such criticism does not affect me emotionally, prompting me to retreat to darker places,” she admitted. “Yet, my family, friends, and community encapsulate the essence of multilingualism and the sense of belonging that springs from diverse backgrounds, reflecting in our manner of speech.”
“Such a synthesis is entirely normal,” Hilaria quipped. “It epitomizes the human experience.”
Days preceding their show’s debut, Alec and Hilaria elucidated why they deemed this the appropriate juncture for venturing into reality television.
“Conveying your narrative is one endeavor; showcasing it is another,” Hilaria articulated while speaking to People. “It felt authentic, it resonated with our humanity. It is empowering.”
“We embarked on this project as an alternative to traditional film or theater engagements. I find myself questioning whether I want to be away from my children for five evenings each week until late. Consequently, my professional endeavors have become less paramount; it offers me the chance to prioritize family time,” she reflected.
While familial obligations remain their foremost priority, Alec playfully jested about their considerable offspring.
“I often tease her, stating, ‘You understand where I ought to be now, don’t you? We should be aboard [David] Geffen’s yacht, sipping cappuccinos, and exchanging tales with [Steven] Spielberg,’” he remarked, to which Hilaria replied, “Instead, we find ourselves changing diapers!”
This humor is particularly ironic given Alec’s historical ribbing of his brother Billy Baldwin for having only three children with his wife, Chynna Phillips.
“I vividly recall when he derided me upon learning Chynna and I were expecting our third child,” the “No Address” star recounted in an interview. “He expressed, ‘What are you becoming, a father?’—a playful jab, considering our parents had six offspring.”
Billy, aged 61, and Phillips, aged 57, united in matrimony in 1995 and are the proud parents of daughters Brooke, 20, and Jameson, 24, as well as son Vance, 24.
“Subsequently, he remarried and expanded his family to three, four, five, and six children,” Billy noted, humorously recalling, “I dispatched him the same quip: ‘What are you, Anthony Quinn?’”
“This joke alludes to the actor Anthony Quinn, who fathered a child at 82, mirroring the situation with Tony Randall, who had a child at 75,” he continued.
