David Johansen, Last Member of the New York Dolls, Passes Away at 75

David Johansen, the distinctive singer renowned for his gravelly voice and eccentric persona, Buster Poindexter, has died at the age of 75. Johansen was the last surviving member of the iconic glam and protopunk band, the New York Dolls. He passed away at his residence in New York City, where he was battling stage IV cancer and a brain tumor, as disclosed by family spokesperson Jeff Kilgour.

The New York Dolls were pivotal in the genesis of punk music, influencing a generation with their flamboyant style characterized by teased hair, extravagant attire, and heavy makeup. This aesthetic laid the groundwork for the glam movement that permeated 1980s heavy metal through bands such as Mötley Crüe and Faster Pussycat. Guitarist Steve Stevens poignantly remarked that the Dolls embodied the raw essence of urban life, capturing the gritty ambiance of New York’s underground scene.

Although the Dolls never attained mainstream commercial success, their innovative fusion of rock ‘n’ roll and theatricality earned them a place in music history. Critics praised their audacious sound and Johansen’s charismatic performances. In 2004, under the persuasion of Morrissey, the band reunited for a festival in England, resulting in the release of three additional studio albums.

Amid his musical endeavors, Johansen ventured into acting, notably appearing in films like “Scrooged” and enjoying a successful solo career as Buster Poindexter, famous for his hit “Hot, Hot, Hot.” His striking persona was celebrated in the documentary “Personality Crisis: One Night Only,” directed by Martin Scorsese, in which Johansen reflected on the complexities of his artistic journey.

Survived by his wife, Mara Hennessey, and stepdaughter Leah Hennessey, Johansen’s legacy as a pioneering figure in music will undoubtedly endure.
