On 1 November, Russian attacks damaged Ukraine’s electricity network. Hundreds of thousands of homes in Ukraine lost electrical power. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said electricity stations in four different areas were hit. Emergency workers began repairs in the western Ternopil region to help bring power back.

The main reason for the attack was Russia launching 433 long-range drones overnight. Ukraine’s air force said it stopped 371 of these drones, but some drones still stayed in the air. President Zelenskyy explained that Russia is attacking Ukraine’s electricity because Ukraine has few interceptor missiles. Interceptors are special missiles used to shoot down flying threats like drones or rockets.

Because of these attacks, Ukrainian families, hospitals, and businesses are without power as winter is starting. This makes daily life more difficult because people need electricity for heating and other essential services. Work to repair the damaged power stations is still going on.
