A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveals that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is becoming a growing concern in the U.S. The report indicates that about 1 in 9 children aged 3 to 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD, with the number of diagnoses rising to 7.1 million in 2022, up from 6.1 million in 2016.

Lead author Melissa Danielson explains that the increase in diagnoses during the pandemic may be attributed to heightened stress, depression, and anxiety experienced by children. The awareness of ADHD has also led to more girls being diagnosed with the disorder, narrowing the gap with boys. Girls tend to manifest ADHD in a more inattentive way, while boys typically display hyperactive or impulsive symptoms.

While the study found an increase in ADHD diagnoses, only about half of the children diagnosed are receiving medication for treatment. Pediatric neurologist Dr. Max Wiznitzer emphasizes the importance of medication and therapy for managing ADHD symptoms.

The report also highlights that many children diagnosed with ADHD have other associated disorders such as behavioral problems, anxiety, and developmental delays. Left untreated, ADHD can increase the risk of serious health concerns in adulthood.

Parents seeking information on treatment and services for ADHD can turn to resources like CHADD (Children And Adults with ADHD), a nonprofit organization. Wiznitzer advises parents to start the conversation about ADHD treatment with their pediatrician.

Increasing awareness and diagnosis of ADHD are crucial in helping children manage the condition and prevent potential health risks in the future.
