The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the job market significantly. Anthropic, a leading AI company, has released a study warning that many jobs could become outdated due to AI tools. Founded in 2026 by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic suggests that while AI can potentially replace many roles, its actual use is still limited.
The study, titled “Labor market impacts of AI: A new measure and early evidence,” reveals that AI could handle many tasks in business, finance, and law, but is currently only being used for a small number of them. This gap between potential and actual use is both hopeful and concerning.
Business leaders have expressed worries about AI replacing white-collar jobs. Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, mentioned that AI could disrupt many entry-level positions. Experts predict that the most affected workers will be older and well-educated, often in high-paying jobs.
Despite this, AI has not yet fully taken over any profession. For example, although AI can automate some tasks in healthcare, it is not widely doing so. The study found that AI can theoretically manage 94% of tasks for computer and math professionals, yet it currently does only 33% of those tasks.
The research highlights a troubling potential for increased unemployment in certain sectors, similar to the financial crisis, but so far, job cuts have not been widespread. However, there is a slowdown in hiring for young workers in AI-affected fields. This shift may lead some to leave the job market entirely.
