A search is currently underway for an American Airlines flight attendant who vanished during a layover in Medellín, Colombia. The disappearance of Eric Fernando Gutierrez Molina, 32, has created significant concern among his family and friends.
Gutierrez Molina, a U.S. citizen living in North Texas, went missing on Saturday evening following a night out with a fellow flight attendant. This outing took place in El Poblado, a neighbourhood in Medellín known for its popularity among international tourists. His partner, Ernesto Carranza, expressed his devastation over the situation, highlighting the uncertainty that has left them feeling lost.
Carranza stated that he last spoke to Gutierrez Molina on Saturday night, when he mentioned plans to socialise with coworkers. Concern grew on Sunday morning when Carranza could not reach him. He later learned that Gutierrez Molina’s phone signals were detected at two locations unconnected to his hotel.
Compounding the mystery, Gutierrez Molina’s colleague who accompanied him reported being unable to remember parts of the evening. Gil, a close friend, remarked that she too was disoriented but managed to return to the hotel.
In response to the situation, Gutierrez Molina’s father has travelled to Colombia to assist local authorities in the search. Manuel Villa Mejía, Medellín’s security secretary, emphasised the urgency of locating Gutierrez Molina safely. Authorities have activated protocols for missing persons and are collaborating with both the U.S. Embassy and the family.
American Airlines has stated it is working closely with local law enforcement and supporting the affected family. The U.S. Embassy has indicated limitations on commenting due to privacy laws but confirmed it is aware of the situation and is monitoring developments closely. Both the State Department and the Association of Professional Flight Attendants reiterated their commitment to assisting the search efforts.
