After McCallum’s death in September, Dietzen found himself co-writing a tribute episode to honor both Ducky and the late actor, along with one of the show’s longtime executive producers, Scott Williams.

The tribute episode, titled “The Stories We Leave Behind,” aired on Monday night on CBS. This emotional episode pays homage to McCallum’s character and his two-decade run on the popular show, as well as his extensive career in Hollywood.

As McCallum’s primary scene partner for 20 seasons, Dietzen had a personal interest in celebrating Ducky in this episode. He expressed the importance of providing both the audience and himself with a sense of catharsis, as well as offering a glimpse into Jimmy Palmer’s future on the show.

The episode showcased the team’s emotional response to Ducky’s passing, while also incorporating a crime element, as is typical of any “NCIS” episode. In discussing the episode, Dietzen emphasized the significance of the stories Ducky told over the course of his time on the show, highlighting how those stories become a part of his legacy.

Dietzen reflected on his time working closely with McCallum and shared insights into the late actor’s life. He marveled at McCallum’s youthful energy and applauded his commitment to maintaining a balanced life between work and family, despite his longstanding career in Hollywood.

In addition to discussing the tribute episode, Dietzen delved into the evolution of his own character, Jimmy Palmer, and hinted at the future of his personal life on the show. He acknowledged the changes and challenges Jimmy has faced, including the loss of his wife, and the introduction of a new love interest, Jessica Knight.

Furthermore, Dietzen addressed the portrayal of inter-office romance on the show, emphasizing the audience’s appreciation for positive and mature relationships on screen. He noted the importance of showcasing emotional maturity and stability, particularly amid the challenges of the real world.
