I found one of the three Demonic partners for the Warlock, called the Tainted, to be the most useful. This demon can attack from a distance, throwing fireballs at slower enemies while staying safe. The other demons had their advantages, but they often struggled in large groups of foes. I did not find much use in the skill that allows teleporting the demon to specific fights or sacrificing it for splash damage. Its standard attacks usually worked well enough.
The Chaos upgrade focuses on area-of-effect (AoE) spells. My build has relied heavily on AoE spells that deal direct damage. The Flame Wave is particularly effective for clearing long paths. I also use the Sigil of Lethargy, which slows down fast-moving enemies, giving me time to plan my attacks.
Combining Chaos skills with weapon upgrades from the Eldritch branch has made my Warlock experience feel like a mix of the best features from different classes, such as Sorceress and Amazon, without copying them exactly.
I have not yet tried the new late-game content in the "Reign of the Warlock" add-on, so I cannot comment on how the Warlock performs in very difficult areas called Terror Zones. However, this Warlock class offers enough new features on familiar gameplay to make a return to the world of Diablo II enjoyable.
