Meningitis is a malevolent disease, typically a concomitant of an infection that causes inflammation of the membranes enveloping the brain and spinal cord. The most common culprits are bacteria and viruses, though the infection may disseminate through more insidious means such as parasites, fungus, or amoeba.
Bacterial meningitis, the most severe variant of the disease, propagates through close contact. As a testament to its severity, numerous college campuses necessitate proof of vaccination against the disease for students to reside on-campus. The consequences of bacterial meningitis are profoundly dire and may include seizures, a comatose state, or even fatality, as per the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The symptoms of Meningitis typically manifest abruptly as a:
- High fever
- Severe Headache
- Rigidity of the neck
Additional symptoms may encompass:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Photophobia (heightened sensitivity to light)
- Altered cognitive functions, manifesting as confusion
The disease necessitates immediate medical attention, so anyone with symptoms resembling those of meningitis should promptly seek professional healthcare advice.
