The South by Southwest Film and TV Festival showcased the intriguing action drama, Civil War, produced by A24. The screening took place to a full house at Austin’s Paramount Theater. The film is notably a tribute to war journalism, steering clear from the political aspects leading to the primary conflict. It also gives an engaging idea about the possibilities of a modern day civil war.
Notably directed by the renowned Alex Garland, the mind behind “Ex-Machina”, the film imagines a dystopian near-future where the country is torn by a long-standing authoritarian president, interpreted by Nick Offerman. The narrative follows Kirsten Dunst’s character, a journalist navigating through a hostile and fragmented America. The initial responses from the audience were quite favorable, with much praise towards the film’s concept and execution.
The film has triggered much interest due to its timing, in the thick of a heated election year where current President Joe Biden has expressed his concerns about democracy being under threat. With many Americans apparently believing in the rather chilling possibility of a new civil war in the foreseeable future, the film’s concept appears to have struck a chord.
Garland revealed he wrote the film four years ago and commended A24 for their courage to back such a project. The film, devoid of specifics on how America lands in such a state of turmoil, aims to stir conversation rather than making assertions, as the director stated. The intention, it seems, is to engage the audience and provide room for interpretation.
Civil War, also featuring Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Sonoya Mizuno, saw a star-studded premiere in Austin. Much of the cast was watching the film for the first time. Kirsten Dunst expressed her admiration for the unique script. The film is set to hit theatres and IMAX on April 12. Watch its riveting trailer below.
