Italian fashion mogul Roberto Cavalli passed away at the age of 83, confirmed by his eponymous fashion house on Instagram. Renowned for his vibrant animal prints and remarkable leather craftsmanship, Cavalli left an influential mark in the fashion industry.

Born in Florence on 15th November 1940, Cavalli’s leatherwork rocked the 1970s, dressing the likes of Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren, Kim Kardashian, and Jennifer Lopez. Aside from his spectacular animal prints, his innovative designs included hippie dresses, sand-blasted jeans, and patchwork on denim.

His ingenuity not only rested on his fashion creations but also extended into developing and patenting a unique leather printing method. This innovative flair led him to open Limbo, his first boutique, in Saint-Tropez in 1972.

Fausto Puglisi, Cavalli’s creative director, commemorated the iconic designer, describing him as “a beacon of inspiration for others.” The late designer’s fondness for maximalist designs and his ability to creatively transform fantasy into seductive clothes set him apart.

Cavalli frequently drew design inspiration from nature. In a 2011 Vogue interview, he shared, “I start[ed] to understand that God is really the best designer, so I started to copy God.” This led to his iconic animal prints, loved and worn by many glamorous celebrities and fashion enthusiasts worldwide.

Fellow Giorgio Armani, founder of Armani, mourned Cavalli’s demise, indicating that his “Tuscan verve” will be enormously missed. Through a social media post, Armani recognized Cavalli as a “true artist” and his uncanny ability to transform fantastical ideas into alluring attire.

Cavalli’s influence on fashion transcended trends, making a lasting impact on the industry that will be remembered and celebrated in the ensuing years. His vivacious designs will continue to resonate in the fashion world, living his legacy.
