As the world celebrated Robert Downey Jr.’s momentous victory at the Oscar awards, Johnny Depp’s congratulatory message was met with unexpected hiccups.
Johnny Depp, best recognized for his role in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ series, generated social media buzz not for his congratulatory words but due to the photoshopped image he posted alongside. His celebration of his friend and ‘Oppenheimer’ star went awry as he mistook a simulated image of the two as actual.
The photograph originally taken from an event titled ‘Young Artists Unite’ held in Los Angeles back in 1988, displayed a youthful Downey Jr. with his then-partner, the famous Sarah Jessica Parker. The edited version which circulated across social media platforms and devoted fan domains replaced Parker with Depp, leading to the misunderstanding.
Depp, known for his iconic role in ‘Alice in Wonderland’, immediately rescinded the faux pas by eliminating the erroneous image from his Instagram story. Making prompt amends, Depp rozered a genuine photograph with the celebrated ‘Iron Man’ star from the Golden Globes ceremony held in 2011 along with a sincere apology in the caption.
Downey returned home holding the prized Oscar for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ to his mantle, recognized for his brilliant portrayal of Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’. This victory marked an appealing inflection point in the actor’s career, which features a chequered past, including an imprisonment sentence in the late ’90s pertaining to drug charges.
Nevertheless, Downey Jr. revived his career and image with his indelible portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man in the acclaimed Marvel Cinematic Universe, and with his recent Oscar triumph, he has added another feather in his illustrious cap.
Expressing gratitude during his acceptance speech, Downey Jr. paid tribute to Christopher Nolan, the cast, and the crew of ‘Oppenheimer’, stating, “I needed this job more than it needed me. Chris [Nolan] knew it. Emma [Thomas] made sure she surrounded me with one of the greatest casts and crew of all time.” He also thanked his veteran entertainment lawyer, Tom Hansen, for standing by him during troubled times.
