The 2024 NAACP Image Awards was swept by “The Color Purple,” bagging four awards during the live telecast and seven other accolades in preceding events. In total, the Blitz Bazawule-directed film secured 11 awards, which was celebrated by Oscars-winner Oprah Winfrey during her surprise appearance.
The prestigious award for Entertainer of the Year was awarded to Usher. Upon receiving this top honor, Winfrey thanked the audience for their extensive support for “The Color Purple.”
The 2024 NAACP Image Awards ceremony was hosted by Queen Latifah live on BET and CBS. Noteworthy is that it was the second year in succession that the multi-talented actress and rapper hosted the award ceremony.
Throughout the ceremony, Queen Latifah put her wit and humor on display. A special mention goes to the joke she made while receiving a fictitious call from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris regarding Usher’s quality sweat. Furthermore, Queen Latifah also addressed prevailing issues such as the gender pay gap during her monologue.
The U.S. Vice President urged Queen Latifah to inform the audience about the 2024 elections and promote voter registration, which she accomplished by drawing attention to the issue of income inequality, specifically among Black actresses. This was corroborated by actress Taraji P. Henson, known for her role in “The Color Purple.” The audience showed massive support when they were invited to stand in solidarity with black actresses combating pay disparity in Hollywood.
Star Quinta Brunson secured her third NAACP Image Award as she picked up the prize for best comedy actress for her role in “Abbott Elementary.”
The FX drama series, “Snowfall,” concluded its six-season run with Damson Idris walking away with the best drama actor accolade, his first NAACP Image Award. His acceptance speech featured an adorable reference to his mother who flew from Lagos, Nigeria to attend the awards ceremony.
The best drama actress award was a surprise upset. “Queen Charlotte” star India Ria Amarteifio managed to beat numerous big names, including the night’s host, Queen Latifah.
The 2024 NAACP Image Awards featured breathtaking performances and emotional speeches. It recognized several talented individuals for their contribution to the world of music, film, and television, while also shedding light on pertinent societal issues.
