Mark Ruffalo Criticises James Cameron Over Netflix Deal

Mark Ruffalo has expressed his views on James Cameron’s recent letter, which opposes Netflix’s potential acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. Cameron supports Paramount’s bid for the company instead.

Ruffalo questioned Cameron’s stance on media monopolies. He wrote on Threads, “Are you also against the monopolization that a Paramount acquisition would create? Or is it just that of Netflix?” He emphasized that the film community deserves clear answers on this matter.

Cameron’s letter, dated February 10 but widely reported recently, was addressed to Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah). In it, the director raised concerns about the future of theatrical film releases if Netflix takes over Warner Bros. He argued that Netflix’s business model conflicts with traditional film production and exhibition, which employs many Americans. He noted that this model is incompatible with Warner Bros., one of the few major studios still in operation.

In response, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos criticized Cameron’s comments during an interview on Fox Business Network. He expressed surprise that Cameron was involved in what he called a “disinformation campaign” supporting Paramount. Sarandos refuted claims that Netflix plans to implement a 17-day theatrical release window, stating, “I have never even uttered the words 17-day window.”

Sarandos assured that Netflix intends to continue its current practice of releasing films in theatres for 45 days, which he described as a “healthy” schedule. He also sent a letter to Senator Lee, claiming that Cameron misrepresents Netflix’s commitment to theatrical releases.
