Meta is changing some employees’ roles to “AI builders” and arranging them into new teams called AI-native “pods.” A leaked memo from Business Insider shared this news. This change affects about 1,000 people in Meta’s Reality Labs, which create developer tools.
Meta aims to build smaller teams and use artificial intelligence (AI) more. The pilot program started last month and gives everyone in the division one of three new job titles: AI Builder, AI Pod Lead, or AI Org Lead. This new setup is meant to create a flatter organisation, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg supports.
The memo explains that the goal is to improve engineering productivity and product quality. The team will work differently and more efficiently. When asked about the changes, Meta pointed out that Zuckerberg believes AI will significantly change work by 2026. He thinks that tasks that needed large teams could be done by one talented person.
Each pod will have a few AI builders working on specific tasks. Pod Leads will manage daily activities, while Org Leads will handle performance reviews and promotions with assistance from AI systems. The overall team size will stay the same. Meta recently laid off hundreds of employees, but the company says this reorganisation is not connected to those layoffs.
