In each generation, there emerges a chosen one — yet again.
Variety has discovered from reliable sources that a sequel series to the iconic show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is on the brink of receiving a pilot order from Hulu.
Reports suggest that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in the final stages of negotiations to reprise her role as the legendary title character in this untitled project. However, the new series will center around a different Slayer, with Gellar taking on a recurring role instead of leading the show.
Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are set to write, showrun, and executive produce, while Chloé Zhao is attached to direct and produce through her Book of Shadows banner. Gellar will also serve as an executive producer alongside Gail Berman. Fran and Kaz Kuzui, as well as Dolly Parton, are included as executive producers, with 20th Television and Searchlight Television handling production. Notably, Berman, the Kuzuis, and Parton were executive producers on the original “Buffy” series.
Meanwhile, representatives for Hulu and 20th TV have opted not to comment.
Strikingly absent from the show’s creative team is Joss Whedon, the original creator, who has faced numerous allegations of fostering a toxic work atmosphere during the production of both “Buffy” and its spinoff, “Angel.”
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” initially debuted as a film in 1992, followed by the acclaimed series starring Gellar, which aired from 1997 to 2003. The show has since garnered a massive cult following, recognized for its influence on television storytelling and representation of strong female leads.
