A recent study conducted in Sweden has revealed a concerning link between tattoos and an increased risk of developing lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. The study, led by Lund University researcher Christel Nielsen, found that individuals with tattoos have a 21% higher risk of developing this rare disease.
Nielsen emphasized that while the results are significant at a group level, further research is necessary to confirm and explore these findings. The study, published in eClinicalMedicine, involved 11,905 participants who reported their tattoo status through a questionnaire.
The researchers discovered that the risk of lymphoma was particularly high for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and follicular lymphoma. They theorized that tattoo ink triggers an immune response in the body, potentially leading to cancer.
Nielsen highlighted the importance of regulating tattoo ink composition and encouraged individuals with tattoos to monitor their health closely. Future studies will investigate the connection between tattoos and other types of cancer and inflammatory diseases.
