Michael Keaton is reprising his iconic role as Beetlejuice in the highly-anticipated sequel, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, expected to hit theaters on September 6. At a recent presentation in Las Vegas, director Tim Burton along with the film’s cast showcased an extended trailer, teasing a chaotic yet comedic plotline.
The sequel will pick up where the original 1988 film left off, with Beetlejuice continuing his shenanigans both in the real world and the Afterlife. A death brings the Deetz family, including Winona Ryder’s character Lydia and her mother Delia (played by Catherine O’Hara), back to their home in Winter River. Unbeknownst to them, Lydia’s daughter, Astrid (portrayed by Jenna Ortega), discovers the town model house in the attic that was home to Beetlejuice.
The new film delves into the complexities of life and death, as humans and spirits try to find ways to coexist. It also welcomes new cast additions, including Willem Dafoe as the fearsome Wolf Jackson, and Monica Bellucci as gothic villainess Delores, whom Bellucci described as “soul-sucking evil.”
Unable to attend the presentation due to filming responsibilities, Ortega was praised by Keaton, who described her as the perfect fit for the film, understanding its unique tone instantly. Meanwhile, Keaton is excited about how his mischievous Beetlejuice character hasn’t evolved much in the sequel. Burton jokingly likened the experience to “a weird family reunion”.
Despite subtle apprehensions about duplicating the success of the original film, Keaton reassured fans, exclaiming, “It’s really good. In fact, it’s exceptional.”
The promise of the return of classic characters alongside fresh faces, coupled with Burton’s signature whimsical style, certainly paints an intriguing picture for the upcoming “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” that is expected to captivate audiences across the globe.
