Three unexpected new dinosaur species have been found in Morocco. They are much like the duckbill dinosaurs found in North America. The most shocking thing is that they seem to have reached an island that was, at that time, cut off from the rest of the world. Fondly named Minqaria bata, one of the new species was the size of a pony and was known for its beak and duck-like qualities.
An international group of scientists found the dinosaur fossils, dating back to the Cretaceous period about 66 million years ago. Their study shows a surprising link between the dinosaurs of Europe and Africa. They seem to have made it across large stretches of open water to reach Morocco.
Minqaria bata and its family were known for their unique head crests. These weren’t just for looks. They contained long nasal passages that could resonate much like a horn. Their brains were also large for dinosaur standards, a trait linked with intelligent, social creatures. It’s likely these duckbills were very social and vocal and would roam the coast of Morocco in flocks.
The discovery deepens our understanding of the past and the diversity of life that existed during the dinosaur era. It goes to show how much is yet to be uncovered in the world of fossils.
