Incidents of Recent Contagion in Epi-week Seven

  • 376 contemporary cases of cholera have been documented emanating from 19 distinct districts.
  • Of these, 221 equivocate to severe manifestations constituting 51% of the total. Subordinate demographic data suggests 213 of these cases involved children under the age of five, corresponding to 57%, while 195 (52%) were females, vividly revealing the demographics susceptible to the contagion. Tragically, three fatalities attributed to the disease were recorded within the week.
  • Scientific analysis of 73 stool samples revealed 11 positive results for V. Cholerae 01 Ogawa via the culture method.
  • A total of 207 samples were inspected using the Rapid Diagnostic Test, out of which 60 signified the possible presence of V. Cholerae 01 Ogawa.

Cumulative Instances (Extended Period: Week 1 – 7 of 2024)

  • During this prolonged period, a cumulative 2,943 cases were reported. Intriguingly, gender distribution data shows that exactly half of these cases (1,471) were females.
  • Of the total number, 1,794 (61%) were children below the age of five, further punctuating the pronounced vulnerability of this demographic. A total of 26 mortalities, representing a Case Fatality Ratio (CFR) of 0.9% have sadly been recorded.
  • With 1,748 acute (59%) forms of the illness recorded and lending more gravity to the situation, it’s evident that the country has encountered a major public health emergency.
  • Distinct geographical areas affected by the cholera outbreak continue to expand, having now 24 flood-impacted districts consequent of El Niño climate fluctuations reporting infection.

Somalia, strategically located in the Horn of Africa, has been beleaguered by relentless disease transmission particularly in the Banadir region since 2017. The persisting cholera outbreak can be attributed to a burgeoning population devoid of access to potable water and adequate sanitation infrastructure. Compounding the already precarious scenario is the onset of El Niño floods, which as per UN OCHA estimates, have negatively impacted over 2.5 million Somalis, resulting in the displacement of a staggering 1.2 million individuals and claiming 118 lives. The cataclysmic climate conditions have intensified the health crisis, culminating in an extensive displacement of the already vulnerable population.

Within the last fortnight, the Banadir region has seen an upswing in the number of reported Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD)/cholera cases, signaling a grave health concern.

A series of districts including Afgoye, Baidoa, Burhakaba, Merka, Kismayo, Beletweyn, and Jowhar, continue to see instability in the progression of the disease, with the case numbers fluctuating undeterminably.

Moreover, it merits noting that a recent surge in AWD cases is unraveling in the Jalalaqsi and Bulleburte districts of the Hiran Region and within the Mahaday district in the Middle Shabelle territory.

Indisputably, since the commencement of the year 2024, the illness has seen an alarming rise, with a total of 2,943 fresh occurrences documented. The geographic distribution of the cases highlights the urgency for targeted intervention in these high-risk areas.
