Riot Games’ anti-cheat system called Vanguard is causing problems for some players. When it first came out with the game Valorant, many players said it harmed their computers because of its close access to the operating system. This issue returned when Vanguard was added to League of Legends in 2024, affecting computers of popular streamers like Nick ‘LS’ De Cesare. Now, the latest update seems to break computers of players who cheat, requiring a full reinstall of the operating system to fix the problem.
To play Valorant or League of Legends, players must install Vanguard. This anti-cheat system works deeply in the computer’s system to stop hackers from cheating. Recently, it has become even stricter. Vanguard now blocks many programs that cheats use to hide, called DMA firmware.
Riot Games acknowledged the complaints. They responded with a post, showing damaged computers and mentioning the high cost of these issues. Some players feel uncomfortable because Vanguard operates at such a deep level. While it aims to stop cheating, it could also accidentally break computers. Players must decide if they want to keep Vanguard to play Riot’s games or not.
