American Airlines and DFW International Airport inaugurated an extension of Terminal C on Monday, marking a significant upgrade for the airline’s largest hub. This 115,000-square-foot expansion is crucial in enhancing operations and customer experience.
The extension includes five renovated gates and four newly constructed ones. American Airlines began using two of these gates, C33 and C34, a few months prior, according to Jim Moses, the airline’s senior vice president of hub operations. Early access to these gates allowed staff to acclimatise to the new setting, which features advanced technology and revised operational processes.
The remaining gates will gradually join flight operations, American Airlines confirmed. This extension showcases innovative features, such as dynamic windows that adjust with sunlight, diverse seating options, and power outlets at every seat. The layout also utilises ceiling lighting to distinguish boarding areas from seating zones. Electronic boarding gates, already trialled in Terminal A, are now a prominent part of the new design.
Moses highlighted that the new pier represents the future of Terminal C. With the opening of this extension, it will be possible to close some older gates for renovation. American Airlines accounts for over 80% of operations at DFW, executing nearly 200 daily departures from Terminal C. Notably, if Terminal C were a standalone airport, it would rank fifth largest for American Airlines by departures.
The innovative construction method used for the pier allowed modular sections to be built off-site and transported to the airport, reducing project time by over seven months. Terminal C’s extension is the first step in a broader $12 billion improvement plan, which includes upgrades to Terminal A and the introduction of Terminal F, the first new terminal in over two decades.
