SEGA’s president, Shuji Utsumi, discussed various topics in a recent interview with the Japanese magazine Famitsu, particularly focusing on the significance of Sonic the Hedgehog for the company. He highlighted Sonic’s role as a key symbol for SEGA, asserting that the character’s success directly influences the overall well-being of the corporation. Utsumi noted that recent achievements associated with the Sonic film contributed to new developmental opportunities for SEGA’s other intellectual properties (IPs).
During the interview, Utsumi also reflected on the challenges SEGA faced in the previous fiscal year, mentioning that the company fell short of its goals for expanding the global reach of Sonic-related titles. He expressed disappointment in the sales performance of the latest Sonic game and indicated a desire for better results, emphasising that the game was well designed. Utsumi stated, “Taking those results into account, we are now proceeding with measures to add more selling power to each title.”
While he did not identify a specific title, it is likely he was referring to “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds,” which SEGA has admitted did not meet sales expectations. Despite these sales figures, the company continues to plan for additional downloadable content (DLC) featuring popular franchises such as Godzilla and Evangelion.
The conversation sheds light on SEGA’s strategic approach to revitalising its beloved franchise and signals a commitment to enhancing the appeal of Sonic games in the face of previous underperformance. The company aims to implement measures that foster greater sales success in future releases.
