Micron Technology is set to invest $250 billion in semiconductor manufacturing in the United States. This will include the construction of what the company claims will be the largest chip manufacturing site in American history, located in Clay, New York. This significant investment highlights the rising demand for memory chips, particularly due to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI).
The company, based in Boise, Idaho, aims to produce 40% of its DRAM memory chips domestically. Micron expects to spend this substantial amount by 2035 to meet increasing market needs. President Donald Trump praised the investment on social media, attributing the announcement to his administration’s economic policies.
Trump has previously criticized past Democratic administrations for holding back American manufacturing. He stated that regulations from the “Radical Left” harmed job creation. Micron’s new facility is projected to create around 50,000 jobs in New York, including 9,000 directly at Micron, with roles for skilled workers and apprenticeships.
Micron’s president, Sanjay Mehrotra, also mentioned increasing the planned investment from $200 billion to $250 billion, which he describes as indicative of positive economic growth in the sector. This project not only aims to strengthen domestic production but is crucial for national economic security.
The investment reflects a commitment to reviving American manufacturing, creating numerous job opportunities, and supporting local businesses. As construction progresses, thousands of jobs are anticipated to become available across various trades and specialties.
