A runner was gored in the face during a bull run at Spain’s San Fermin festival on Saturday. Many other runners were lucky not to be seriously hurt. The event took place in Pamplona, where six bulls and some steers raced down narrow streets filled with excited people.
The bulls knocked several runners down, causing chaos as some fell and created pileups. The run lasted about two and a half minutes, ending at the bull ring where bullfighters will later kill the bulls. One runner needed medical attention after being struck by a horn, while twelve others had minor injuries. An American runner from Florida broke his ankle but plans to continue participating.
A black bull separated from the group early in the run and charged into people, hitting one person in the face. Many runners did not notice the bulls coming up behind them and simply pushed them away instead of running. This run was the fifth of the eight-day festival, which celebrates 100 years since the publication of Ernest Hemingway’s novel “The Sun Also Rises.”
There have been no deaths at the bull runs since 2009, but injuries are common, especially with many inexperienced runners joining the event.
