The divorce case between billionaire Chey Tae-won and his ex-wife Roh Soh-yeong has taken a new turn. Recently, a Seoul court ordered Chey to pay Roh 944 billion won, around $644 million. This amount is much lower than what Roh wanted.
Chey is the chairman of the SK Group and also leads SK Hynix, a large memory chip company. He and Roh divorced over ten years ago, announcing it publicly through a letter. Since then, Roh has sought a bigger share of Chey’s wealth, arguing that her father helped the company grow with an early investment.
Roh wanted her payout to reflect the expected value of Chey’s companies in 2026, as artificial intelligence (AI) has caused stock prices to rise. However, the court decided to use a lower valuation from 2024, before the AI boom increased prices significantly.
Chey keeps two-thirds of the asset division, while Roh receives one-third. This latest ruling was less than a previous decision that would have given her about $1 billion. The court’s findings align with a Supreme Court ruling, which stated Roh’s father’s contributions should not be considered in the valuation.
