A series of troubling emails and serious allegations have enveloped a California woman, Michelle Hadley, who spent months in jail after being wrongfully accused of crimes she did not commit. This case has gained attention due to its shocking elements, including a documentary titled “A Toxic Love Story,” available on Netflix since July 23.
Hadley’s ordeal began after she ended a two-year relationship with Ian Diaz, a U.S. marshal, in 2015. The situation escalated in 2016 when Angela Diaz, Ian’s new wife, claimed that anonymous emails were threatening her with visions of violence and even sexual assault, suggesting Hadley was behind them. Following a 911 call on June 24, 2016, reporting an alleged assault on Angela, Hadley was arrested and later bailed out the following day.
The police acted on the basis of the emails’ content, which seemed similar to previous communications from Hadley. Despite her protests of innocence, she faced severe charges, including attempted rape and stalking, with the possibility of a life sentence. Hadley spent 88 days in jail before investigators revealed that Angela Diaz had orchestrated the deception, sending the threats to herself in a bid to frame Hadley.
Following her exoneration in October 2016, Angela Diaz faced multiple charges, including perjury and kidnapping, resulting in a five-year prison sentence. In 2021, Ian Diaz was arrested and later convicted of conspiracy and cyberstalking in 2023, receiving a ten-year federal prison term.
Hadley has since filed a civil lawsuit against the Anaheim Police Department for mishandling her case and settled for an undisclosed amount in April 2021. In light of recent events, Hadley expressed gratitude for the newfound support from the justice system, stating that it has brought peace to her family.
