Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey has announced plans for a groundbreaking roller coaster called Bakunawa, inspired by a mythical sea serpent from Philippine folklore. Set to open in 2027, Bakunawa aims to break six world records, marking it as one of the tallest roller coasters globally.
The coaster will reach a height of 382 feet and speeds of up to 100 mph along a 3,163-foot track. Riders will experience three launches, including what the park claims will be the world’s first upside-down launch. The design features free-spinning, floorless trains, ensuring that each ride experience is unique.
Mike Fehnel, the park’s president, described the thrill of climbing straight up to the top before sliding around the outside and experiencing a reverse descent. Bakunawa is set to become the fastest and tallest spinning coaster in the world, breaking records for the fastest inversion and longest stall inversion, among others.
The ride’s name, Bakunawa, refers to a legendary serpent said to rise from the sea and eat the moon. Riders will ascend the coaster’s towering spire and briefly pause before plunging back to Earth, with their orientation changing due to the train’s rotation.
Bakunawa will serve as the highlight of a redesigned Boardwalk area at the theme park. However, Six Flags has not yet confirmed details regarding the renovation or a specific opening date. The coaster will operate with two trains, each accommodating 20 riders, and requires a minimum height of 48 inches. Each ride is expected to last approximately two minutes and 17 seconds.
