Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Enhances Accessibility Features

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will be released on 9 July for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through the Ubisoft Store, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. This upgraded version invites players back into Edward Kenway’s adventures during the Caribbean’s Golden Age of Piracy. Enhanced accessibility features aim to make the game more playable for a wider audience.

Jonathan Bedard, Director of User Experience, and Game Designer Maksym Smolynets discussed their focus on accessibility. They wanted to maintain the original game’s spirit while incorporating today’s Ubisoft standards, shaped by years of development. They engaged with the gaming community to gather feedback on past accessibility improvements and explored industry practices to enhance player interaction.

Since its initial release over a decade ago, accessibility in games has advanced significantly. Bedard noted that many formerly niche features are now standard practices, driven by collaboration within Ubisoft and across the industry. While not every improvement could be transferred, players can expect more than just basic updates in this version.

New features include a customizable camera dot to reduce motion sickness, larger subtitles, and enhanced controls. The game allows for extensive customization, including remapping and numerous input options. It also offers flexible gameplay solutions, such as less strict underwater mechanics and easier navigation.

Bedard expressed pride in these updates, stating they allow both new and returning players to engage more fully with the game. This upgrade, he noted, represents Ubisoft’s most significant leap in accessibility for any title to date.
