Eric Dane, known for his roles in popular TV shows such as Euphoria and Grey’s Anatomy, has passed away at the age of 53. His representatives confirmed that he died on Thursday afternoon, less than a year after revealing his diagnosis with motor neurone disease.
Dane announced his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a type of motor neurone disease, in April. A statement from his family mentioned that he spent his final days surrounded by close friends, his wife Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia. It highlighted his commitment to raising awareness about ALS, emphasising that he aimed to help others facing similar challenges. The family has requested privacy during this difficult period.
ALS leads to the gradual loss of muscle control, affecting a person’s ability to move, speak, and breathe. There is currently no cure, and patients typically live for about 27 months after diagnosis, though some, like Stephen Hawking, can live much longer.
Dane became a household name playing Dr Mark Sloan, also known as “McSteamy,” in Grey’s Anatomy. He later appeared as Cal Jacobs in Euphoria and was expected to feature in the show’s upcoming third season, filming from a wheelchair due to his health issues.
Sam Levinson, the creator of Euphoria, paid tribute, expressing deep sadness at losing Dane, noting the honour of working with him. Dane’s career included a variety of roles, and he was set to receive an award for his advocacy work before his health prevented his attendance at the event.
