The Geely Galaxy M9 is a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) crossover SUV, similar in size to the Kia EV9 and Telluride. In testing, it managed a remarkable 101 miles of driving using only its electric power before its gasoline generator activated. In China, the starting price is around $25,000.
As more experts in the U.S. examine Chinese cars, they are discovering their quality. Following this year’s CES, Geely allowed the publication Edmunds to test the Galaxy M9 like any other vehicle sold in the United States. The results surprised the testers, revealing that the Galaxy M9 outperformed some of the best existing hybrid crossovers and could compete with well-known brands if released in the U.S.
The SUV has a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine and three electric motors powered by a 41 kWh battery, producing a strong total of 858 horsepower. The Galaxy M9 can accelerate to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds, which is faster than many competitors. Additionally, it features a responsive infotainment system, comparable to those in Tesla cars.
However, if the Galaxy M9 reaches the U.S. market, it may not be at the same price due to various factors affecting pricing. While Geely is eager to sell more vehicles in the U.S., it faces challenges, including tariffs on Chinese-made cars and political opposition. Nonetheless, the success of the Galaxy M9 indicates that Chinese cars are becoming more competitive globally.
