Google Conducts Test by Limiting Access to News Sites in California to Gauge Impact of Proposed Legislation

Share

Google started a test last week. They stopped showing some California news sites in their search results. This test is because California might make a new law. The law would make Google pay news sites when it links to their stories.

Google is trying a short test with a few users. They want to see how the law could change their search engine. Google also said they would stop starting new projects with California news groups.

Google helps people find news. This helps news websites get more visitors without paying. But the new law could change this. Jaffer Zaidi from Google wrote that this law could harm their way of working.

The law wants Google and other big companies to pay news sites. A group of judges would decide how much they should pay.

California has lost over 100 news sites in ten years. Buffy Wicks, who made the law, thinks this will help save journalism.

The law got support from many people but tech companies don’t like it. It needs to pass in the Senate to become a law.
