In 2022, George R.R. Martin revealed that House of the Dragon is planned to have four seasons. He emphasized the need for “four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to the Dance of the Dragons.” Season two recently concluded with just eight episodes, but showrunner Ryan Condal confirmed that the original plan for four seasons remains intact.
According to a report from Variety, Condal announced at a press conference marking the end of House of the Dragon‘s current season that the show will conclude after season four. Although a third season has been renewed by HBO, the fourth season is not yet official. Condal mentioned a potential production start in “earlyish 2025,” with season three currently in the writing stage.
Despite deviations from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood Targaryen history, House of the Dragon will not face the same challenge as Game of Thrones in overtaking the source material. With a predetermined conclusion in mind, the show seems poised to offer a more satisfying ending than its predecessor.
As seasons three and four approach, they must deliver action-packed content to unravel the complicated Targaryen legacy. With production potentially starting in 2025, fans may have to wait until 2026 for the return of House of the Dragon on HBO and HBO Max.
