New Software Thwarts Thieves Targeting Hyundai and Kia Cars

A recent analysis of insurance claim data reveals that thefts of vehicles equipped with new anti-theft software updates from Hyundai and Kia have significantly decreased, in contrast to the overall high rate of thefts observed. This comes over a year after the automakers introduced the updates in response to a sharp rise in thefts of specific models due to online tutorials on vehicle theft.

The software upgrades, implemented since February last year, have led to a 64% reduction in “whole vehicle” theft claims for Hyundai and Kia cars compared to those without the upgrades, as per the Highway Loss Data Institute.

Matt Moore, senior vice president of HLDI, commended the effectiveness of the companies’ solution, emphasizing the significant drop in theft claims among the vulnerable Hyundai and Kia models made before 2023.

Older models of these cars, lacking modern anti-theft technologies like electronic immobilizers, were targeted due to their vulnerability. The software updates, part of a $200 million settlement, have been critical in mitigating the theft risks associated with these vehicles.

Persistent Challenges

Despite progress, only a fraction of eligible vehicles have received the security upgrade, leaving many at risk of theft. However, efforts are underway to enhance security measures for these vehicles.

While strides have been made in reducing theft rates, there is still work to be done in ensuring that owners properly utilize the new security features to safeguard their vehicles effectively.

The sharp increase in thefts, fueled by social media trends, is expected to diminish as more vehicles are equipped with advanced security systems and as awareness of theft risks grows among owners.
