Spotify and UMG Agree AI Covers and Remixes Deal

Spotify has signed a licensing agreement with Universal Music Group (UMG) to use generative artificial intelligence (AI) for music. This deal allows Spotify to eventually develop AI tools that enable fans to create covers and remixes of songs by UMG artists and songwriters.

The announcement took place on 21 May during Spotify’s Investor Day. The company claims this initiative will open new revenue opportunities for artists and enhance the visibility of UMG talent. Premium users will soon have access to these AI features as a paid addition, although a launch date has not been specified.

This licensing agreement aligns with Spotify’s earlier commitment made last year to collaborate with major music labels like UMG, Sony Music Group, and Warner Music Group to create “artist-first” AI music tools. At that time, Spotify revealed plans to establish an advanced generative AI research lab.

Spotify has set out four guiding principles for its AI development, which prioritise the choice of artists and songwriters to participate. The company acknowledges the diverse opinions within the artistic community regarding the use of generative tools.

In a recent podcast, Sam Duboff, Spotify’s global head of marketing and policy, described the service’s role as a platform for professional artists. He emphasized that their aim is to enhance connections between artists and fans, rather than create tools that compete with the industry.

Remixing through AI is gaining traction, with startups exploring similar ideas focused on customising licensed songs. Alex Norström, Spotify’s co-CEO, highlighted the importance of consent, credit, and compensation for artists in this initiative.

UMG’s CEO Lucian Grainge noted that innovations in music should bring artists and fans closer, reflecting the essence of this new initiative, which aims to support artistry and create more revenue opportunities.
