Williams-Sonoma Ordered to Pay $3 Million in Civil Penalties for Misleading Made in USA Claims

Williams-Sonoma has been ordered to pay over $3 million in civil penalties after falsely claiming that its products were made in the USA when they were actually manufactured in China. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Justice Department announced a settlement of $3,175,387, marking a record-setting civil penalty for Made in USA fraud.

FTC Chair Lina M. Khan emphasized the importance of holding companies accountable for deceptive practices that mislead consumers and harm honest American businesses. The parent company, William-Sonoma Inc., which owns a variety of high-end kitchen stores including Pottery Barn and West Elm, violated a 2020 FTC order requiring truthfulness in labeling about the country of origin for its products.

As part of the settlement, Williams-Sonoma Inc. must admit to the false claims and maintain accurate records of its product manufacturing for future reporting to government agencies. This settlement comes after the FTC sued the company in 2020 for advertising certain product lines as being made in the USA when they were not.

The company has yet to respond to requests for comment on the matter. This case serves as a reminder that companies engaging in deceptive marketing practices will face consequences, and it highlights the importance of truth in labeling for consumers and businesses alike.
