80% of HIV Cases in Ghana Linked to Sex, Says GHANET President

The President of the Ghana HIV and AIDS Network (GHANET), Ernest Amoabeng Ortsin, said that 80 per cent of HIV infections in Ghana are passed on through sexual intercourse. He shared this information during a Valentine’s Day event at West Hills Mall in Accra. At this event, GHANET gave out HIV self-test kits and condoms to help reduce new infections.

Mr Ortsin stated that sexual activity is the main way HIV is transmitted in Ghana. He noted that eight out of ten people with HIV got the virus through sex. This worrying number has led GHANET to focus more on public education and prevention, especially during times like Valentine’s Day, when more people may have sex.

He explained that they give out condoms to promote safe sex practices. This is not to encourage people to have sex but to help prevent the spread of HIV. He also mentioned that mothers can pass HIV to their babies during pregnancy or breastfeeding if they do not take their medicine.

Mr Ortsin urged mothers with HIV to take their medication properly to protect their babies. GHANET will keep working on public education to help fight HIV/AIDS in Ghana.
