At the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, ElevenLabs, an artificial intelligence (AI) audio company, joined forces with Rebecca Gayheart Dane, widow of actor Eric Dane, to launch a new initiative. This programme aims to provide free AI voice restoration for one million individuals who have permanently lost their voices.
During a panel discussion at SXSW on Friday, ElevenLabs’ co-founder, Mati Staniszewski, announced that the company is searching globally for participants for the One Million Voices Initiative. He invited attendees to share contact information for people suffering from voice loss, particularly due to cancer or other medical conditions. Interested parties can fill out an online interest form.
Eric Dane, famous for his roles in Euphoria and Grey’s Anatomy, passed away in February after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease that affects muscle control. Before his death, he worked with ElevenLabs to recreate his voice, and now Gayheart Dane wants to highlight this technology to help others.
Gayheart Dane emphasised the importance of one’s voice, stating that losing it can significantly affect a person’s identity and joy. She described how ElevenLabs’ technology brought back joy to Eric by restoring his voice for their daughters.
Despite ongoing concerns about AI technology, Gayheart Dane believes this initiative exemplifies its positive potential, encouraging other companies to follow suit in using technology for good.
