Peter Jackson is collaborating with Stephen Colbert on a new film titled “The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past.” This movie is not a direct sequel but will explore some material from J.R.R. Tolkien’s original novel, “The Fellowship of the Ring,” which Jackson had previously omitted. It will include a framing device set after the events of “The Return of the King,” suggesting a narrative that features flashbacks.
The film’s synopsis reveals that Sam’s daughter, Elanor, uncovers a hidden secret and seeks to understand how the War of the Ring was nearly lost before it started. Fans are looking forward to seeing the next generation of Hobbits in action. Tolkien provided some details about Elanor in his notes and appendices. Notably, she is Sam’s oldest daughter and has a name inspired by a flower from Lothlórien. She is described as exceptionally beautiful, with rare golden hair.
Elanor, born at the beginning of the Fourth Age, is one of Sam and Rose’s thirteen children. She later marries Fastred of Greenholm. Known for her adventurous spirit, Elanor lives in Gondor for a year when she is twenty and eventually inherits the Red Book from her father. This book contains the history of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings.”
In the upcoming film, Elanor may also interact with prominent characters like Aragorn and Arwen. This will likely reveal more about her role in preserving her family’s heroic legacy. However, an official release date for “The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past” has not yet been announced.
